Maryville is a city in Blout County, Tennessee. The city has a rich history, if you are a history buff, this is the place for you! Before the area was named Maryville, it was called Fort Craig. Fort Craig was built in 1785 in an effort to protect settlers from Indian attack. The area began growing with its first church, which was established in 1786.

Later on July 11, 1795, Maryville broke ground. This was successful by an act of the General Assembly of the Territory South of the Ohio River. The town was named after Mary Grainger Blout, the wife of Governor William Blout. The couple was an integral part of the origination of the area, with the county being named after the Governor. Maryville started with 50 acres of land that was established by 7 commissioners. This land was divided into lots. The profits from the land were used to construct a courthouse and a jail.

In its early days, many were drawn to this area because of its abundant spring water supply. Eventually, during the Civil War, the area was damaged by fire and artillery. The courthouse was spared, but many other local buildings were destroyed. After the Civil War, Maryville began its restoration with the city’s first railroad in 1868. Maryville’s first school was built in the 1870s.

Today the area’s downtown has plenty of historic buildings still in continuous use. You will find entertainment, offices, restaurants, retail shops, recreational opportunities, government buildings, educational buildings, religious institutions, medical offices, and housing opportunities here. Some of the area’s improvements included roads, sidewalks, street lighting, 2 small parks, landscaping, and more community signage.
